Fretuoso® is now available on Android in open beta. If you’ve wanted to practice your fretboard knowledge on an Android device, we’d love for you to try it and tell us what you think.

After more than a decade exclusively on iOS, we’ve finally taken the jump and brought Fretuoso to Android. Throughout the port, we’ve focused on preserving feature parity with the Apple platforms, bringing the same practice tools and learning experience to Android phones and tablets.

Get to Know Your Fretboard

Finding a note shouldn’t mean counting up from an open string every time. Fretuoso helps you build that familiarity through short practice sessions, with support for guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, and mandolin.

Choose the way you want to practice:

Training mode lets you learn at your own pace, with adaptive exercises that give more attention to the notes you find difficult.
Game mode adds timed challenges when you’re ready to test your recall.
Staff learning mode connects written notes with their positions on the fretboard.
Free play mode gives you room to explore notes and tunings.

You can customize your tuning and practice area, then use detailed statistics to see where you need more work. Whether you’re learning your first instrument or picking up another, a few spare minutes can become a useful practice break.

Texts From Jesus and Texts From Oscar Wilde previously had Android editions years ago. We are delighted to bring them back in a new form, rebuilt and refreshed with inspiration from the current iOS apps. We are introducing Voicemails, a major new feature for our AI texting apps that lets supported figures respond beyond the chat bubble. Across the Text With apps, you can ask for a voice message during a conversation, or turn an existing text reply into audio and hear it in that figure’s own voice.

TL;DR: Voicemails let you request spoken messages from supported figures in Text With Jesus, Text With History, and Text With Authors. They are organized, searchable, and never expire. Free credits are available for everyone to try, Premium subscribers receive 30 Voicemail credits each month, and more supported figures are being added over time.

What Are Voicemails?

Voicemails work like voice messages on your phone: you ask a supported figure to leave a message, then listen whenever you want. Each supported figure has a distinct voice and personality, so the message feels closer to a personal note than a standard text-to-speech reading.

The feature is designed for moments when reading is not enough. A blessing, encouragement, historical reflection, study prompt, or literary note can feel different when it is spoken aloud. Instead of replacing chat, Voicemails add another layer to it.

You can use Voicemails in two ways:

Request a new voice message from a supported figure during a chat.
Convert an existing text reply into a Voicemail and listen to it later.

Once created, your Voicemails are organized in the app, searchable, and never expire, so you can return to a favorite message whenever you want.

Where Can You Try Them?

Voicemails are available across the Text With family where supported figures have voice support enabled. That includes experiences in Text With Jesus, Text With History, and Text With Authors, with more figures being added over time.

Each app uses Voicemails a little differently because each app has a different kind of conversation:

You can also hear before you ask. Each figure with Voicemails enabled has a voice preview button on the app page, so you can quickly play a short sample and get a feel for the voice before starting a conversation or spending credits.

Why We Built Voicemails

Voice changes the feel of a conversation. Reading a reply is fast and useful, but hearing a message can make a moment more memorable, especially when the conversation is personal, reflective, or tied to a character whose voice you can imagine.

For faith conversations, Voicemails can make a short reflection easier to revisit during the day. For history, they can make a figure’s perspective feel more immediate. For literature, they can make a passage, writing prompt, or author insight feel closer to a spoken classroom moment.

The goal is simple: keep the control and convenience of chat, while adding the warmth of audio when it helps.

How Voicemail Credits Work

All users receive free credits to try Voicemails. Premium subscribers receive 30 free Voicemail credits every month as part of their subscription, and users who want more can buy additional credit packs directly in the app.

Requesting a new Voicemail and converting an existing text message both use Voicemail credits. One credit creates one Voicemail, whether you request it from scratch or generate it from an existing reply. That keeps the feature flexible: you can ask for a message in the moment, or wait until a reply stands out and convert it afterward.

Your saved Voicemails remain available after they are created. They are organized and searchable in the app, and they do not expire.

Practical Ways To Use Voicemails

Voicemails are most useful when you want to save, replay, or step away from the screen. They are not just a novelty; they can turn a quick chat answer into something you carry with you and find again later.

Try using them for:

A morning reflection from a spiritual figure in Text With Jesus.
A study recap from a historical figure in Text With History.
A writing prompt from a favorite author in Text With Authors.
A saved explanation you want to replay before a class, meeting, or commute.
A converted reply that felt especially helpful, memorable, or comforting.

Because Voicemails can be requested or converted, you do not have to decide in advance which answers matter. Keep chatting naturally, then turn the best moments into audio when you want to revisit them.

What Comes Next

Voicemails will continue expanding to more figures across the Text With apps. We are starting with supported voices where the experience feels strongest, with the goal of eventually bringing Voicemails to every figure.

You can preview voice samples on the app pages now. Look for the play button on each Voicemail-enabled figure.

Open your app, start a conversation with a supported figure, and try requesting a Voicemail. The next message you save might be one you listen to, not just one you read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert old text replies into Voicemails?

Yes. You can convert an existing text reply from a supported figure into a Voicemail and hear it in that figure’s voice. Conversions use the same Voicemail credits as newly requested voice messages.

Do all figures support Voicemails?

Not yet. Voicemails are expanding across the Text With apps, and supported figures will show the option while you chat. Our goal is to eventually support every figure, with more voices added as the rollout continues.

Can I preview a figure’s voice first?

Yes. Every figure with Voicemails enabled has a voice preview button on the app page. Tap the play button to hear a quick sample before you request a Voicemail or convert a text reply.

Do Premium subscribers get Voicemail credits?

Texts From Trump App Has Been Removed

In light of recent events unfolding in Washington, we have decided to permanently retire our Texts From Donald Trump app from the iOS App Store.

As of today, the app is no longer available for download. Support will no longer be provided for the app and it will not see any further updates.

If you previously downloaded the app, it will continue to work on your devices as before. It will not be available to install on any new devices.

We humbly encourage you to try out our Texts From Founding Fathers app instead, which provides much of the same features albeit without the baggage of quotes from a seditious ex-president.

Fretuoso 6.5 is out with iCloud support and deprecated instrument editions

Today, we are releasing version 6.5 of the Fretuoso app, with an important new feature: iCloud support.

This means that all of your app data, from your settings, custom tunings, and statistics to your instrument purchases are now safely stored in your connected iCloud account.

If your device is set up with an iCloud account (and it really should be!), your data is automatically imported and synced with the cloud. It will also automatically propagate to any other devices running Fretuoso you may have connected to the same account.

You will now be able to practice the fretboard on your iPhone and your iPad, and can pick up from one device to the other transparently.

This new support for iCloud also brings all of our various editions of the app together for the first time, as your iCloud data is also shared between them as well. So if you are using both our Banjo and Guitar editions, for example, your data will be preserved between these versions of the app.

As a consequence of this change, since your purchases are now automatically shared between all editions of Fretuoso, we are officially deprecating the various instrument editions, as well as the Complete Edition.

From now on, we will provide feature updates only through the main app (previously known as the “free” edition). In the coming months, these editions will stop receiving any updates besides iCloud support, and will eventually be removed from the App Store.

If you are using one of the paid editions of Fretuoso, or made purchases in any of them, just make sure to update it to at least version 6.5 and start it once while logged in with your iCloud account. Your purchases will be automatically unlocked in the main Fretuoso app as well, and you can switch to it immediately.

This consolidation is bringing more clarity to our app offering, and will simplify the life of both our users and ourselves as developers.

Fretuoso 6.1, now ready for iOS 11

With the recent release of iOS 11, we are proud to announce the availability of the latest version of the Fretuoso® apps to support the latest version of the Apple operating system.

Version 6.1 is now available on the App Store for all devices running iOS version 9.0 and later.

We have recently added support for new screen sizes, most notably the latest 10.5” iPad Pro that came out a few months ago, and we have started making accomodations for the upcoming iPhone X, whose larger screen presents some additional challenges for apps like Fretuoso. We will be further refining support for this new device before its release in early November.

This new version of Fretuoso also uses the latest version of the AudioKit framework, the open-source audio library that we have been collaborating with to help developers provide first-class audio applications on Apple platforms. Version 4 was just released, feel free to check it out if you are interested in making your own audio apps for iOS!

Fretuoso 6, featuring AudioKit

Today we are proud to announce the availability of a major new version of our Fretuoso® apps.

Fretuoso 6.0 mostly features some significant internal changes compared to previous versions of the app. The most visible are the improved support for iOS 10, and the move to AudioKit as our new audio engine.

Now Powered By AudioKit

A few months ago, we announced that we were actively supporting development of this new open-source framework for Apple operating systems.

Today marks the first time that we actually ship an application using it. AudioKit provides Fretuoso with a more solid audio foundation which will pave the way for some exciting new features in the near future.

The main reason the switch wasn't made earlier was that using AudioKit forces us to drop support for devices running iOS 8. Today, the vast majority of active iOS devices run iOS 9 and above, and this will be the minimum supported configuration for Fretuoso releases from now on.

Other changes in this release include the following:

Taptic feedback on the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
Various bug fixes and improvements.

Fretuoso 6.0 is available today on the App Store and is a free upgrade for all users.

Texts From Bernie Sanders

We are proud to announce the release of the latest app in our Texts From series, Texts From Bernie.

Focusing on quotes from Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont, it follows in the footsteps of the Texts From Trump app we released a month ago, allowing us to cover a wide spectrum of political discourse in the 2016 US Presidential Election.

Better known as the anti-establishment candidate of the American left, Bernie Sanders has been active in political life as an elected official for many decades and has managed to shake up the political world in this campaign cycle with his staunchly progressive rhetoric.

All quotes are gathered from various public online sources, and are drawn from many speeches and public appearances across his career, including of course his 2016 campaign for the US presidency.

It also joins previous apps in the series mostly focused on historical figures, such as Texts From Founding Fathers, Texts From Oscar Wilde and Texts From Jesus.

Like in other Texts From apps, a new quote gets delivered every day to your device as a notification, via a Today Widget or on a paired Apple Watch. Quotes can be quickly “loved”, “hated” or shared on Facebook and other social networks.

Additionally, all quotes are indexed by iOS 9 for quick and easy search.

In addition, we also released updated versions of all the other Texts From apps. These bring various bug fixes, and improvements to the Glance for Apple Watch.

Texts From Donald Trump

We are proud to announce the release of the latest app in our Texts From series, Texts From Trump.

This new app follows in the footsteps of other popular apps in the series, which includes Texts From Jesus, Texts From Founding Fathers and Texts From Oscar Wilde.

The app is timely as it comes in the midst of a very heated and unusual U.S. presidential election year. Donald Trump is best known for his frequent past and present incendiary statements that have set the media ablaze.

We hope to help contribute to the public discourse on this crucial race by making some of these statements more accessible to users of Apple devices, and the public at large. The app will be updated regularly as new quotes become available.

All quotes are from public statements from Donald Trump, gathered from his famous Twitter account, his public speeches, to newspaper articles and media interviews. A few excerpts from some of his published books are also included.

Like in other Texts From apps, a new quote gets delivered every day to your device as a notification, via a Today Widget or on a paired Apple Watch. Quotes can be quickly “loved”, “hated” or shared on Facebook and other social networks.

Additionally, all quotes are indexed by iOS 9 for quick and easy search.

In addition, we also released updated versions of all the other Texts From apps. These bring various improvements, particularly a much improved Facebook integration.

New training feature in Fretuoso 5.9

A few days ago, we released the latest version of Fretuoso for iOS.

Among the usual set of bug fixes and minor improvements, we also included a brand new feature giving you yet another option to focus your fretboard training: a time limit for guessing each note.

This new option can be enabled by going to the training options, within the settings menu or from the wheel icon that appears in training modes.

The new training option

This option basically allows you to set a time limit within which you need to guess the note prompted to you. Being a training option, this only applies to the fretboard training and staff training modes, not the game mode which is independent of these settings.

The maximum value is 10 seconds; the option is turned off by default.

In effect, this allows you to make your training more challenging, and adds a time element which was previously mostly relegated to the game mode.

Any guess not made in the allotted time will effectively count as a miss, though you will get a nice TOO LATE sign to tell you you were too slow to answer! We suggest you start with a higher value and progressively lower it as you get more comfortable.

2016 is Here! Guitar Trainer now 100% free

Before there was the new Fretuoso app for iOS, came its venerable grand-daddy just a few years back.

Guitar Trainer was a Java app for feature phones and BlackBerry; the first version came out in 2007 before the iPhone even made its mark on the mobile industry. It was regularly updated up till version 1.2 released back in 2011, when further development pretty much stopped in favor of Trainer HD (now known as Fretuoso).

Up till now, the original Guitar Trainer app was still available for sale on a number of legacy app stores, including directly from our mobiletutor.org website. The cost was about $5 per copy on average, which for such an old app was rather high. Looking at recent usage for the app, it appears that it is still in use mostly by people in developing countries stuck with legacy feature phones.

To celebrate the new year and the recent release of Fretuoso, we have decided in turn to make the original Java Guitar Trainer completely free! The app will no longer see any new updates, but you will be able to enjoy it as it is for as long as it works on your old phone without having to spend any money. We hope it will still be a useful tool for users of legacy phones around the world.

To get your copy, you can now head to our product page and request a free download code. Further instructions will then be provided to help you complete the download and installation. For BlackBerry users, the app can also be downloaded on the BlackBerry App World store directly.

We still have a demo version of the app available, but at this point it should be considered deprecated. Feel free to upgrade to the full version right now if you were still using it.

Introducing the new Fretuoso!

If you have been using our Trainer HD educational games, the app has been rebranded!

Trainer HD is now Fretuoso. We also have a new logo!

We also have a new version out for you (5.8), which brings some major improvements to the old Trainer HD app. Just in time for Christmas!

Adds full support for new devices, including the new iPhone 6S and the large iPad Pro.
Also supports the latest iOS 9 system. We had to drop support for iOS 6, and you'll now need at least iOS 7.1 to use Fretuoso on your device.
3D Touch shortcuts on the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Force-press the app icon and you'll be able to quickly start or resume training, game, or free play.

We also fixed a bunch of nasty bugs!

All previous users of Trainer HD will be upgraded for free to Fretuoso on supported devices. Besides the free version, we will also still release and update the separate instrument editions, as well as the Complete Edition.

As we approach 2016, we have some very exciting features in development for the next major version of the app, Fretuoso 6.0.

Texts From apps 6.0, now for Apple Watch

We are proud to announce that the newest version of our Texts From apps (including the popular Texts From Jesus, Texts From Oscar Wilde and Texts From Founding Fathers) is out.

All of those apps now include built-in support for Apple Watch. This simple app allows you to quickly access the quote of the day from your wrist, as well as share it with your friends over Facebook. A Glance is even available for quick access to the daily quote simply by swiping up from the watch face.

In addition, Texts From Jesus now includes a lot of new verses (by popular request), mostly drawn from the Gospel of Thomas.

Texts From Founding Fathers also includes quotes from four new Fathers: James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams and John Jay.

Finally, we have redesigned the websites for each of these apps. Check them out!
